Where to find Ladybug colonies in the Bay Area

Bundle up for a hike with the kids and witness ladybug colonies in the Bay Area overwintering.


Ladybug season is approximately from November to February

  • 7087 Skyline Blvd, Oakland

  • Option 1: Start from upper loop where there’s a parking lot and a restroom The hike is about a  2 mile loop and you can make it longer or shorter!

  • Option2: Start from lower Pinehearst and all the ladybugs are in the lower section. Keep in mind there are fewer parking spots on that side, but you won’t need to hike as much to see the ladybugs


  • Location: 7867 Redwood rd, Oakland 

  • The hike is about 3 miles round trip. Stroller friendly/bike & scooter friendly the first 3/4mile of the way.

  • Park in the third parking lot in the very back

  • Take the Stream trail: you’ll follow it around on the paved path passing a very small playground and a bridge. There is a bathroom at the end of the paved path. This is where you can park your bike/scooter. The rest of the way is not paved.

  • Walk another about 10-15 mins until you’ll reach a bridge. 

  • Cross the bridge on your right. Go up a hill & down the other side to your left are the ladybugs.


  • Location: 8515 Croy Rd, Morgan Hill 

  • Spot the ladybugs on the creek trail on the way to Waterfall loop trail 

  • $6 parking fee

  • Prepaid vehicle day pass required to ente,  book online

  • Start at the day use parking lot and walk up the stairs. Pass the restrooms and go through the picnic area, then when you reach the paved park road and a fork, bear right. After a short stretch downhill, turn left onto the signed Waterfall Loop Trail. Take the trail for 1.2mi until you reach the creek. You can turn back here or cross the creek and continue.
